Artist, Photographer, Author

You can simply call me "Rick."

As long as I can remember I've been a communicator of ideas. For most of my adult life this has been through teaching (the Anglo-Saxon side of my family is filled with educators), yet now I have the opportunity to communicate primarily through my artistry (the Italian side of my family is filled with artists)!

My love for art started very early. I can remember drawing fairly accurate renditions of the human heart and skeleton in elementary school (at that time I wanted to be a doctor), and over time I also developed a love for black and white photography and writing; both of which have in common the precision necessary to communicate ideas well. Not that I avoid “color” (I also dabble in oil and acrylic painting), but the starkness of monochromatic images and the written word are intriguing to me.

I’ve also always been driven by a desire for my “audience” to pause and ponder the meaning of things. Thus, the style of my art and photography is designed to capture attention and then draw the observer deeper into the image to embrace something meaningful. I correlate this to the relationship with God I discovered in college. He got my attention on the macro level, then guided me into the micro level of who He intended me to be. It turns out I am equally educator and artist.

But it's time to focus on the artist. And, despite the philosophical musings in this post, it remains okay simply to appreciate my artistic endeavors as art, which in the very least I hope you do!

About My “Creative Musings”

Art

My pen/ink artwork is filled with symbolism and intended to inspire a Macro/Micro/Macro encounter—to provoke contemplation by offering an intriguing image (macro), which draws the viewer into its details (micro), then back out to reexamine the concept more broadly (macro).

Philosophically the Macro/Micro/Macro approach stems from my encounter with God—from the macro level of His existence as Creator of the Universe, to the micro level of His eternal Son existing for a season as human being, to the macro level of what Jesus did in the context of God’s glorious and eternal plan.

Photography

My monochromatic photography is intended to express the power and importance of contrast; truth contrasting falsehood, light contrasting darkness, seen contrasting unseen, clear contrasting vague, etc.

Philosophically this is rooted in the metaphysical contrasts of good and evil, life and death, temporal and eternal, God and self, etc.

Books

My books are intended to create proper tension between a person’s idea of Jesus and His actuality in Scripture—not only to self-examine one’s beliefs, but to encourage a pursuit of Christ’s life and teachings.
